If you are a blogger, you probably came across the term XML before. It is all over the place. But what is XML after all? And more importantly, should you care about it?

XML stands for Extensible Markup Language. Basically, it is a markup language created to transport structured data across different systems and platforms. There is an article over W3C titled “XML in 10 Points,” which gives an introduction to this language. The 10 points are:
  1. XML is for structuring data
  2. XML looks a bit like HTML
  3. XML is text, but isn’t meant to be read
  4. XML is verbose by design
  5. XML is a family of technologies
  6. XML is new, but not that new
  7. XML leads HTML to XHTML
  8. XML is modular
  9. XML is the basis for RDF and the Semantic Web
  10. XML is license-free, platform-independent and well-supported
After reading the article you realize why you should care about XML (or at least understand how it works). XML was created to facilitate the use of structured data across the Internet, and it is already becoming the standard for applications and platforms that try to accomplish that.
RSS, for instance, is just a modified XML format which carries the headlines and main content of your blog.
Notice that XML will not substitute HTML, but rather complement it. HTML is concerned with how data looks (on a website, for instance), while XML is concerned with describing the data itself and its structure.
The main difference between these two markup languages is that HTML has fixed tags, while in XML the tags need to be defined by the user or by the platform (that is why it is called extensible).
Many people think that Web 3.0 will be the semantic web. We can’t say for sure, but XML will probably be there, as the standard tool for transferring data across the Internet.
If you are interested you can read more about it on Wikipedia and on XML.com.
Adding a custom domain to your blog is a great way to increase your brand identity. Setting one up, however, can sometimes be a frustrating experience, especially if you aren’t quite sure of the difference between an A-NAME and C-NAME record or where to find them.

The good news is that the folks at Go Daddy created a handy tool that simplifies the process and makes it possible to redirect your blogspot domain to a custom Go Daddy domain with the click of a button.

If you already own a Go Daddy domain and would like to connect it with your Blogger blog, head to the Go Daddy tool, log in to your Go Daddy account, enter your preferred domain or subdomain (for instance www.example.com or blog.example.com), click Confirm, and voila, your DNS records are updated.
Once your DNS records are set correctly, log in to Blogger, click “Add a custom domain” in the Publishing section of the Settings page, follow the short instructions, and your custom domain will be set up and redirecting in 24 hours or less.

If you purchased a domain from another provider, don’t worry, we’ve got a step-by-step guide that will walk you through the setup process. And finally, if you would like your blog to redirect to a custom domain, you can purchase one and get it set up without complicated configuration right from the Blogger dashboard in the Publishing section of the Settings page.

Every website owner knows that security of her website is just as important as the fancy things it can do. Hackers target unprotected websites through password cracking programs, insecure PHP coding and outdated scripts. Malware code is injected into websites' HTML and PHP files, causing web browsers to display hacked messages or advertisements instead of owner's intended code. To protect a website, you must remove any vulnerable source that can be exploited by a hacker.

Instructions
Things You Need :
FTP Programme
Microsoft Notepad

  1. Website Protection

    • 1
Change the main website password (also known as the web hosting plan password) once a month. Use a combination of numbers, letters and symbols to form a secure password that is hard to guess or crack through hacking programs. For example, the password "K8965Fn45aa" is harder to guess than "rosebud4,"
    • 2
Log in to each PHP script installed and in use (guestbook, blog, mailing list) and change their administrator passwords. Form difficult administrator password for each script that you're using on the website.
    • 3
Update all scripts that are in use and are planned to be parts of the website in the future. Upgrade to latest available and stable versions by downloading them from the developers' websites. Update any security patches available through the developer. Outdated PHP scripts have insecure coding and are often hacked and injected with malware code.
    • 4
Remove any scripts that are outdated and no longer in use. Delete the files off the web server or follow uninstall directions if available through your website's control panel.
    • 5
Disable global directives and variables (which can be used to gain access to administrator panels and inject malware code) from your web hosting account. Alter the ".htaccess" file to secure the website and protect it from this common malice.

    Disable "php_globals"

    • 1
Log in to your website's root directory using an FTP program. Select "Show hidden files" from the FTP display options.
    • 2
Locate a folder called "public_html" and open it.
    • 3
Download ".htaccess" from your website to your desktop.
    • 4
Right-click on the downloaded ".htaccess" file. Select "Open With - Notepad."
    • 5
Type on the first line of the .htaccess file the following code:
      php_flag register_globals off
Save the file and upload back to "public_html."

Tips & Warnings

  • Always delete old scripts that are no longer being used. For example, if you have switched to a new guestbook script, you can save the MySQL database, which saves old entries but remove script files. Hackers can find unused scripts as long as the files are on your web server, which should still be accessible through a web browser, and inject malware code. You would be the only person with access to the MySQL database and it will not be compromised.
  • Register_globals can also be turned off through php.ini files, but most web hosting customers do not have such server access granted to alter php.ini. You can alter php.ini to turn off register_globals if you have your own server or high-level access. Regular web hosting customers should alter .htaccess files located on their website's root directory.
  • Do not alter any other coding in the ".htaccess" file as it may be needed for your website to function. Add only the provided code on the first line and save.
  • Running an antivirus program on your computer will not detect malware code injected into your website's files. Antivirus programs scan only local computers but can find any spyware and malware that you've accidentally picked up while browsing websites. They will not, however, clean out your website files from any hacking activities.

As you may have heard, things are starting to look a little different across many Google products—and today, Blogger is the next product to get a makeover.

It’s been a few years since we made major updates to Blogger’s look and feel, and there’s a lot more to these changes than just shiny new graphics. We’ve rewritten the entire editing and management experience from scratch so it’s faster and more efficient for you—and easier for us to update and improve over time.
Monitor and grow your audience at a glanceIn the new “Overview” section of your dashboard, you’ll be able to quickly get a pulse for how people are reacting to your blog with a graph of your most recent traffic numbers, comment activity and follower counts. For extra guidance and inspiration, you’ll also find a list of helpful links, a feed of Blogger updates and a showcase of other blogs you may find interesting
Throughout the design process, we conducted user interviews to help identify how to make Blogger even easier and more enjoyable to use. We also watched users try our new interface and made many refinements based on their feedback.

A streamlined blogging experience
Whether you’re on a dashboard or settings page of blogger.com, you can always create or edit posts with just one click at the top of the screen. Additionally, the post editor has been expanded and simplified to give you a larger canvas for drafting and previewing your work.

Opt in nowStarting today, we’ll gradually let all bloggers choose to turn on the new UI, so your Blogger experience won’t be updated until you enable it. Over the next few days, keep an eye out for a pop-up announcement on your dashboard with instructions on how to get started, and check out this Blogger Help Center page to learn more about what’s changed.

If you have suggestions or feedback about the new look, click the gear icon in the top right of the navigation bar and select “Send Feedback.”

We’re working hard to fundamentally revamp and improve the Blogger experience from the ground up, and we hope you enjoy the first in a series of major updates that are on their way in the coming months.
